THE SHOEMAKER... An Immigrant & A Dream is dedicated to all those who have faced the unknown. With great Faith and Hope, they boarded ships and aimed them at the New World. Even in their great toil, there was Joy. They loved their work and wanted only the best for those who would follow. Even when fear should have won, there was determination, humor, innocence and daring.
This work embodies the spirit of adventure taken on by the immigrants, while in a fun way, quoting the varied geographies from which they embarked.
Twilight’s Last Gleaming was conceived as one of two alternative finales to A Wish to the World Suite. A reimagining of TAPS, it is written at the Grade 2–3 level, with 3rd clarinets remaining below the break. Its foundation in simple rhythms fosters disciplined listening, refined balance and blend, and careful attention to tuning and intonation.
Despite its accessibility, the work demands Musical maturity. Horns and brass are invited to extend into their upper registers, allowing advanced players to shape the score’s emotional apex. Younger performers may fully participate by taking more challenging passages down an octave without compromising the integrity of the Music.
There comes a time when twilight has its last gleaming for each of us. Connected to the larger suite, this piece carries a message. It honors those remembered on Memorial Day, yet it also looks forward. As much as it reflects on the past, it stands as a quiet prophecy of what is yet to be.

RENDEZVOUS WITH DESTINY from STORMWORKS Chapter 1-Prime: a Wish to the World Recorded by the Troy University Wind Symphony, Ralph Ford, Conductor
912 at 5:33 for Band of the 3rd Millennium
by © Stephen Melillo IGNA 9:33 PM 19 March 2003
Commissioned by Mr. William Ratcliff & the Alma High School Symphonic Winds, Alma, Arkansas for the Commissioning of the USS RONALD REAGAN CVN-76
This is one of several “Storm” pieces that employ Morse Code as a rhythm generator and layered message carrier. Within the cinematic march, we hear “Peace Through Strength.”
“You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We can preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we can sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children’s children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done.”Ronald Reagan 1964
“I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm’s way.” John Paul Jones, 1778
New Mexico has been a Spiritual Home for me ever since I met the Souls of Bataan. When I was recently conducting the New Mexico All-State Band, a gentleman came up to me and said, "Querencia!" That's what you're asking from the kids!"
He explained that "Querencia" is the word shouted out as the bull got closest to the bullfighter. It is the idea of COURAGE, but Courage as a function of how close one allows Danger to get near.
In that Real Life closeness to Danger and in that Metaphor, this work is humbly offered as a fun gift to the young Musicians who will explore it and render it!
STORMWORKS Chapter 1 Prime, a Wish to the World,
is available as a suite. Like STORMQUEST and STORMJOURNEYS, additional site licenses are also an option.
A Wish to the World is a series of pieces written to inspire the next generation of Heroes. These pieces can be played as a suite across the Music Program in the manner of THE FOUNTAINHEAD and STORMQUEST, or they can be rendered individually.
A Wish to the World was commissioned by Barry Wentz and the Alpena High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble with Ray Reynolds, Director of the Thunder Bay JHS Band, and Keith Hodsgon & The South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble, Mr. Larry White & The Rancho Buena Vista Wind Ensemble in California, Mr. Paul Holzen & the Parkway Northeast Middle School, and the Kentucky Music Educators Association.

JEFFERSON'S VISION
This Americana Theme for Young Band employs interesting harmonies and simple rhythmic impetus to help ensembles develop a good sense of blending, intonation, and warmth of sound. It's scored to give your young group a full sound while providing each of the sections its own opportunity to contribute to the overall message. Phrase markings clearly illustrate the flow of air as the piece develops.
THE KNIGHT IS YOUNG!
THE KNIGHT IS YOUNG is the opening statement, fanfare, and prelude to the "A Wish to the World" CD. This work falls within the grade 4+ - 5 range. It was composed for the Kentucky All-State Band 2000 and for similar situations, where either honor bands or region bands, etc, had unusually large instrumentation and needed Music. It was challenging for me to once again enter upon a situation where 4 oboists would be asked to read... and "tune"... one line of Music.
This work creates another option for conductors seeking a somewhat atypical opening statement... which utilizes larger forces of double reeds and brasses.
TRIAL & TERROR
TRIAL & TERROR provides an opportunity to explore changing meters and expressionistic effects in a straightforward manner while introducing themes and ideas connected to the larger body of Chapter 1-Prime.
LONELY IS THE KNIGHT
As an accomplished violinist, a teenaged Catherine Geach left the comforts of home to bring Music to the war-torn people of Cambodia. Pitted against the forces of the Khmer Rouge, Catherine acquired a one-acre plot, built a school, then recruited students. She learned Khmer, the language of Cambodia and then the country's musical heritage, the ancient Pin Peat Music. She taught orphaned children how to play the takhe, shaped like a crocodile, the roneat thong, a bamboo xylophone and the large gong vong.
It is difficult to appreciate the sacrifice of this Hero, who so unselfishly gave herself to the cause of resurrecting another country's musical heritage, while at the same time, bringing Hope to war-battered children. In fact, the thought of her "giving" is quieting and humbling.
LONELY IS THE KNIGHT is a tribute to Catherine Geach, and perhaps a comment on what it is she must sometimes feel in the dead of night, so far from home.
The many concepts provided within this work can be investigated in the Score Notes.
HEART OF THE HERO
A Concertino in F for Piano & Band
Across the suite A Wish to the World, we have paid tribute to unsung heroes, described situations a hero must face and told a story about the not-too-distant past... and future. In Heart of the Hero, we discover that quiet and relentless song, that quality which is forever held in the Heart of such an individual. Innocent, perhaps humorous, the Hero faces adversity often... but in the hero's heart, a courageous theme plays without bounds. The hero prevails.
This work was composed for situations where you have a fine pianist who might not otherwise have the chance to shine and be brought to the forefront of your Music program.
