STEVE'S
CORNER
"What
will be the judgment a century hence concerning the lorded
works of our favorite composers today? Inasmuch as nearly
everything is subject to the changes of time, and - more's
the pity- the fashions of time, only that which is good and
true will endure like a rock and no wanton hand will ever
venture to defile it. Then, let every man do that which is
right, strive with all his might towards the goal which can
never be obtained, develop to the last breath the gifts with
which the gracious Creator has endowed him, and never cease
to learn. For life is short, art eternal." Ludwig van Beethoven |
"Music
is music whether it is for the stage , rostrum or cinema . Form
may change, the manner of writing may vary , but the composer needs
to make no concessions whatsoever to what he conceives to be his
own musical ideology ..." Erich Wolfgang Korngold (interviewed
in 1946)

INTERVIEW
with GERHARDT ZIMMERMAN: "Will the Canton Symphony ever release
a CD? It's a goal. I have a composer in mind if we can come up with
the financial wherewithal to put it together. His name is Stephen
Melillo. I gave the world-premiere performances of his first two
symphonies (with the North Carolina Symphony) and they were wonderfully
well-received by the audience. But at this point, a CD is in the
gee-wouldn't-it-be-nice-if stage. You have a dedication to programming
works by new composers, which I know is not popular with everyone.
Basically the premise comes down to this: To ensure the music of
the past, you have to enable the music of the future. Some people
don't realize that. No matter how good the music may be, it's not
going to please them because they have this built-in wall against
anything since Brahms."

Steve
and Kurtwood Smith met while working on the Oscar nominated 12:01PM.
They have collaborated again on Melillo's
AHAB! a work for Actor and Wind Ensemble composed in 1992 and
recorded on the STORMWORKS...
Chapter Two CD.
"Steve: Wow ... what a CD!! It's fabulous and I can't tell you how
happy I am to be a part of it. The music for the entire disc is
wonderful and I am so pleased with the Moby Dick piece ... the way
you have worked voice and music together is very exciting ... once
I got over criticizing myself and just listened to it I really felt
I experienced the entire emotional life of the story ... it's beautiful.
Congratulations Steve. I hope we can continue to work together ...
and I thank you again for making me a part of your project. Hope
to see you soon." Kurtwood Smith, Actor

Thanks
to Photographer Joe Smith! Here, my friends is such a great shot.
It's a sandwich in which the bread far exceeds the quality of the
meat! Note the Ship's Wheel in back of me, denoting ERICH!
and AHAB! Note that there's
a ship in back of Dr. McBeth, denoting OF SAILORS & WHALES. Note
that in back of Ed Lisk (aka Edmund, AKA Edward "Scissorhands"
Lisk) is a Brick Wall denoting one of the most solid, most strong
and dedicated people in Music Education... a true Mentor and Hero!

STEVE'S
CHALLENGE
Dear
"Mathematics" teacher... and/or composition contest judge, and/or university director who has heard a warm-up from the 996 pieces and come to the massively non-science-based conclusion that , "this is film Music..."
By listening
to just one 3:34 composition, please derive an analysis. Your insights
will be measured against the actual analysis which is currently
in the possession of the school Music Teacher. After deriving the
analysis, you must then explain the mathematical significance of
the interrelatedness in the analysis. At the center of the composition
is a Matrix, called the 34-Matrix. I have used this matrix
in many of the STORMWorks.
Before
beginning the analysis, you must correctly explain this Matrix,
taking into account its significance in History... as well as the
significance of its numeric and symmetrical symbolism. If you are
able to correctly and completely analyze the Music, via its inner
geometry, then we must move on to the reason for the coded
message.
You
must decipher the mathematical code implied by the analysis and
derive the substance and meaning of the work. If you are able to
do this, then together, we shall mutually deem Music an "extracurricular"
subject. Mere fluff. If not, you will kindly cease and desist from
propagating a completely ignorant position and accept Music as a
powerful reflection of Humanity, abounding not only in arithmetic,
but Mathematics and Physics. We shall not yet consider matters of
the Heart and Soul, often left unspeakable. You will subsequently
rise to the level of the true Renaissance Individual, and become
worthy of the title: Teacher.
If
a student does not do well in Music Class, he or she may not be
able to attend your class until such time as you have emerged from
the darkness of your narrow, dimly-lit cave and figured out that
all of us are doing our best to affect the lives of our students
with more than just bread! (... and for the composition contest
judge? Now, I will send you a piece! And for the university director, sitting low upon Olympus?... you will still need to watch Herbert Von Karajan.)
Godspeed!
PS: Isn't it cool that this is layers deep within the STORMSite? ; - )!
And
back by popular demand... (actually, it was just a couple of directors)
